New Westminster, B.C. (August 8, 2026) — The New Westminster Progressives have released their Commitment to Queensborough, an eight-point plan focused on the distinct needs of one of New Westminster’s most unique and fast-growing communities.
The plan responds to priorities Queensborough residents have raised with NWP candidates, including traffic congestion, safer streets, drainage and road maintenance, better recreation facilities, school access, community safety and a stronger local voice in city decisions.
“Queensborough is part of New Westminster, but it also has its own identity, its own geography and its own very local challenges,” says Ken Armstrong, NWP council candidate and Queensborough resident. “Residents have been clear with us – they want City Hall to treat Queensborough as a priority, not an afterthought. That starts with practical commitments on traffic, safer streets, drainage, policing and real accountability for getting things done.”
The NWP will advocate for a new Queensborough Bridge or third crossing, pursue a fixed pedestrian crossing between Queensborough and Quayside as part of rail swing bridge redevelopment, and keep the Q to Q ferry operating as an important transportation link between the two communities.
The plan also commits to delivering the artificial turf field and all-weather track at Ryall Park, identifying land with the province for a future Queensborough high school, and pursuing safe, reliable, free bus service for Queensborough students travelling to New Westminster Secondary School.
“Queensborough families should not have to accept fewer options because they live across the bridge,” says Don Doyle, NWP school board candidate and Queensborough resident. “Students need safe, reliable transportation to NWSS today, and the community needs a serious plan for a future high school site. These are practical steps that would make a real difference for families.”
The commitment:
- Traffic flow: Advocate for a new Queensborough Bridge or third crossing, with clear timelines and accountability for improving Queensborough mobility.
- Pedestrian link: Pursue a fixed pedestrian crossing between Queensborough and Quayside as part of rail swing bridge redevelopment, while keeping the Q to Q ferry.
- Recreation facilities: Deliver the artificial turf field and all-weather track at Ryall Park.
- High school site: Identify land with the province for a future Queensborough high school.
- Student bus service: Pursue safe, reliable, free bus service for Queensborough students travelling to NWSS.
- Street infrastructure: Improve drainage, lighting, pedestrian crossings and road maintenance, and introduce a 50/50 grant matching program to help eliminate open ditches faster.
- Community policing: Expand the Queensborough Community Policing Office and station a Community Enforcement and Safety Officer there.
- Local voice: Hold regular Queensborough town halls and bring council meetings into the community.
“Queensborough residents deserve the same attention, service and accountability as every other part of New Westminster,” Armstrong says. “Our commitment is simple: listen locally, act locally and deliver practical results.”
The NWP is running a team of 13 candidates for New Westminster city council and school board in the upcoming municipal election. The NWP’s platform is informed by ongoing conversations with residents through New West City Matters, the party’s community listening initiative.
