Daniel Fontaine

Daniel Fontaine brings proven council experience, business expertise, a strong accountability record, and a clear, back-to-basics approach to local government. If elected mayor, he will champion responsible spending, safer and cleaner streets, stronger core services, infrastructure repair, and a more open city hall.
  • Elected to New Westminster City Council in 2022 as one of the first New West Progressives members on council.
  • Principal of MICHIFCO Consulting, with senior leadership experience across the private, not-for-profit, public and Indigenous governance sectors.
  • Former Deputy Minister and CEO of Métis Nation BC, CEO of the BC Care Providers Association, and chair of the Canadian Association for Long-Term Care board.
  • Board service includes Hockey Canada, SafeCare BC, the BC College of Psychologists, and the Canadian Association for Long-Term Care.
  • Public communications background includes co-hosting the #BCPoliTalk podcast/webcast and work as a political columnist with The Orca, 24 Hours, Global TV and CKNW.
  • Recognized with the 2016 Volunteer of the Year Award from the New Westminster Minor Hockey Association and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for Public Service.
  • Holds a BA in Political Studies from the University of Manitoba and an ICD.D designation from Simon Fraser University.
I’ve spent my career working in and around public service, small business and community organizations, and I know residents are tired of promises that don’t turn into results. As mayor, I want to bring city hall back to the basics – listen carefully, spend responsibly, fix what needs fixing, and earn back people’s trust one decision at a time.

Daniel Fontaine brings direct council experience and a clear record of pushing for more transparent, accountable, and resident-focused local government. First elected in 2022 as one of the first New West Progressives members on council, Daniel has become a consistent voice for fiscal responsibility, stronger public engagement, and renewed attention to the basic services residents rely on every day.

Daniel believes New Westminster needs leadership that respects taxpayers, listens to neighbourhood concerns, and delivers practical results instead of political distractions. His priorities include repairing neglected infrastructure, improving public amenities, addressing public safety, supporting cleaner streets, and rebuilding confidence in city hall.

Daniel is a small home-based business owner who has built a career across the private, not-for-profit and government sectors, including work in Indigenous governance and public leadership. He holds a political science degree from the University of Manitoba, completed the Directors Education Program through Rotman’s Institute of Corporate Directors, and has also completed media writing and public relations training at Langara College. That mix of council experience, professional leadership, and communications background will help him lead a more open, responsive, and accountable city hall.
